Pastel pink and pearl white, deliberately soft next to a blacked-out stack. Keep two or three spare in your bag: when somebody says it is their first one, this goes on their arm before they think to ask, and they still have it three years later.

How to make it
- 1Cut the cordCut 45 cm (17.5 in) of 1 mm stretch cord. The extra is what you hold on to while you string — you trim it at the end.
- 2Count the beads out firstLay all 26 beads out in chart order, left to right. Sorting up front is the difference between one clean pass and restringing at 2am.
- 3String it in orderThread each bead on in the order you laid it out, keeping the cord flat so it never twists inside a bead.
- 4Check the fit before you knotSize it so it clears your knuckles, then check it can slide over two clasped hands — that is the move the Respect beat makes. If it will not slide, it is a keeper, not a trade.
- 5Tie it offSurgeon’s knot, pull it into the gap between two beads, then a dab of clear glue. Trim the tails once it is dry.
